When we arrived to meet our Airbnb host for check-in, there were tourist groups in the square taking photos. It wasn't until we looked up that we realized it was one of the key photo spots in town given the unique circular shape of the top of the buildings.
We spent the first day walking around the old town of Barcelona, saw the old Roman city walls, visited the original cathedral, and wandered a bit aimlessly around the narrow streets. We visited the history museum with excavated underground Roman ruins from over 2,000 years ago. Many of the buildings date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. There is a concentration of tapas bars, restaurants, boutiques, and plazas.
We also had a cute moment in one of the famous squares popping large bubbles created by a local hoping for money (we had no Euro coins at this point). Watch for cars, bikes and scoters or you’ll get run over. And don’t cross the street on a green flashing light as you only have a few seconds before it turns red - and cars don’t wait.
We had lunch near the water where my cousin, Riley, and I ordered an Iberian ham and pineapple salad. We wondered what type of salad dressing would be on it. Turned out, it was just Iberian ham and pineapple - we ate just the pineapple.
We had cocktails at nearby restaurant, met friends for dinner and, much later, hit the clubs which are only open from midnight to 5am. It’s our first port that had an energy to it as prior ports were mostly quiet given winter and Covid.
